Newborn Fireman Photo Shoot
When my friend, Chelsea, contacted me months ago to capture her beautiful baby boy, Noah, I felt so honored. Then she told me that Noah’s Daddy was a Captain in the fire department and that she wanted to incorporate Daddy with his gear. Well, I jumped up and down and squealed like a little girl! The idea of doing a Newborn Fireman Photo Shoot made me so excited at the opportunity to be creative. We started planning his session immediately.
We contacted Modest Little Me Boutique so she could make a sweet, little hat with his Daddy’s number on it and cute, little fireman pants. How special is that! The items are beautiful and handmade.
My primary concern was how to incorporate his gear safely into the shots without compromising Noah’s safety. We wanted to use his helmet, his turn out gear (which was SO heavy), and of course, his Daddy, Wayne.
How I Did It…
For the first shot, I actually used his turnout gear like a little basket. I’m not a fan of putting babies in boots but I liked the idea of using the boots and turnout gear. The gear is strong but not strong enough to hold a baby by itself. I used a posing pillow (made by Modest Little Me Boutique) inside the waistband. The top of the poser is wire and you can shape it to fit the way you want. I positioned it in there and made a little bed for him with just enough of an incline that I could push his little legs comfortably down into the pants. I pulled the pants tight in the back with a clip so it would be more secure. He was very snug but not too snug.
Mama was just to the right of him with her hands hovering and in the original picture. Although he was snug into the gear, I didn’t want to depend on the gear to hold him. He was never by himself! If he had stirred, there would have been an instant hand. Plus, I wouldn’t have even tried this if he hadn’t had been sleeping soundly. I used two different images to make this one image because I photoshopped his Mama out!
When I do shots like this, I try to capture several different views. A horizontal image, a portrait image, a close up, and then I love the last shot which is always over the baby so we can see their sweet little profiles.
In this image, I stood over him and took the shot straight down while his Mama hovered there and was keeping a hand on the gear helping to keep it nice and steady. I photoshopped her hand and arm out in this one also.
Chin on Hands Pose…
In this shot, I had baby’s little tush and legs at a criss cross apple sauce position inside the helmet. I wanted all the edges to be softened for Noah’s soft skin so I placed fabric between the baby and the helmet. I built a little shelf for his arms to go across with a pillow. He was in a sound, deep sleep and completely rocked this position which isn’t an easy one.
Fireman Noah…
I love using the Greek Flokatis in every single session for my newborns. Underneath the fur is a soft, donut shaped pillow and we just tucked him down into the pillow with his little fireman hat and his own little turnout gear and he snuggled in perfectly! Noah was the perfect model for his Newborn Fireman Photo Shoot. 🙂
Sweet little Noah is already so loved and adored by his Mama & Daddy and it was an absolute joy to incorporate this important part of their lives into their session!
