Cinco de Mayo Cake Smash
I have always wanted to do a Cinco de Mayo Cake Smash and I finally got the chance. When my client requested it, I immediately started planning for his session. I’ve never done a Cinco de Mayo Cake Smash and it was definitely on my bucket list! I’m a person who likes symmetry and perfectly matched sides in my backdrops but every time I thought about designing this Cinco de Mayo set, I thought of a happy, messy party that would spark joy. And it really did!
I’d love to share with you how I created this Cinco de Mayo set so you can use the ideas for your own backdrop for your little one’s birthday party! These decorations would create the perfect backdrop for your little one’s guests to watch him or her enjoy their first cake!
How I Did It
As I created my Cinco de Mayo set, I relied on my experience in Guadalajara, Amazon, party ideas, and even the fun Three Caballeros ride from Disney World. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated the 5th of May every year to commemorate the Mexican Army‘s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. In the states, it’s a celebration of Mexican-American culture. I will fully admit that as I was setting up, it made me happy! It also made me crave homemade traditional margaritas (on the rocks with salt) and nachos and salsa. Yum!
Here are some fun items I purchased that you can easily find at party stores and on Amazon.
- Table Runner – link.
- A light up cactus – link. His mama brought the cutest tiny sombreros and we placed one on top while doubling it as a hat for little Owen.
- Festive Paper Fans – link.
- Mexican Papel Banners – link. You can find these at Party City, too!
- Cute, circle light garland – I cannot find where I bought these but I think it was Michael’s on sale!
- Big Sombreros and little – link.
- Big Pinatas – you can find at Walmart, a party store, or craft store!
- Little Piñata – you can find it at Party City.
- Maracas – link. Owen’s mama brought some beautiful ones that were bought in Mexico. Then we had some fun, play maracas for Owen to have.
My Secret Weapon
That last item leads me to one of my secrets for my cake smashes. You should always have a back up toy that goes with your theme for when the baby gets bored. The maracas were perfect for baby Owen.
Be creative and have fun! You want to think lots of bright colors. Also, If I had to add foods, I would add appetizers of nachos, queso, salsa, little jalapeño poppers, and of course, margaritas. One more thing – don’t forget a beautiful, colorful cake! Lastly, don’t worry about the Pinterest perfect party – focus on how much fun a Cinco De Mayo theme can be and let it that fun be the center of your party!
